If you are an athlete, and if you’re reading this article chances are you are, then I’m sure you’ve thought about increasing your performance. Every serious athlete I’ve ever known has wanted to compete at a higher level and have more success. Unfortunately most athletes get stuck on the plateau that resides just below the elite status they’re looking for. It takes a lot of work, some smart choices, and a little good luck to be an all-American.

Elite athletes achieve greatness because they work for it. There are innumerable training philosophies that may or may not get you to the next level, but one constant element in the equation is hard work, and a whole lot of it. I think most trainers would agree that weight training combined with a cardiovascular workout is the most effective way of going about developing your body. Whether you are a big weights person or you insist on raising your heart rate with cardio, the workout you perform will no doubt be tailored to your sport and your goals. But you’re not going to get away from putting in your time.

All-American athletes train hard and play a lot. I coach volleyball, and every time I meet a new athlete who wants to compete, the no-brainer advice I always give is to get in the gym. There’s really no substitute for practice if you’re looking for greater proficiency. But there are some things you can do to get ready for practice so your game time performance is at its peak.

Weight training is essential for any great athlete. Weight training correctly not only makes you stronger, but with a much higher heart rate, you’ll burn more calories than you ever have before. If you already spend time with weights and want to see more results, adding creatine, whey protein, and a multivitamin to your daily routine will help you dramatically. Creatine is a muscle builder at its core. Taken before or after you weight train will provide your muscles the fiber and nutrients they need to grow and repair themselves more quickly. Whey protein is like a protein IV, it will provide you the essential proteins you need to replace what’s gone and repair your muscles after the burn. And multivitamins provide your recommended daily allowance of all your major vitamins and a variety of minerals as well. It’s certainly worth popping one a multivitamin every day to ensure you are healthy for your strength.

Becoming an all-American is not easy. Elite athletes spend hours and hours, weeks upon weeks working hard at whatever it is they want to be great at. On top of that though, most also incorporate creatine, whey protein, and multivitamins to their diet in order to maximize their results and ultimately their performance. If you want to get to the next level, adding a supplement to your diet can really help you get over the hump. A great athlete will tell you that it takes a lot more than just talent to be an all-American.
