The nature of sports these days requires that individuals practice certain skills that will help them benefit their team. The essentials of good defense are form, quickness, and the ability to adapt. Form is what coaches generally focus on. It’s the most diagnosable part of a skill in any sport, something that we always seek to duplicate if we’re able to do it correctly. Having the correct form is the fruit of research, film, and years of practice. Defending in most sports involves being in the right spot, knowing your opponent’s tendencies, and working to take away their strengths. Good form is essential, but most defenders don’t get great results unless they are quick.

Quickness comes naturally for some people, but work is almost always unavoidable if you want more speed. Strengthening your legs and core are fundamental to quickness.
