The workout for a body builder is far different from that of the average person. The reason is because they have put in the time to get the strength needed to lift a lot of weight, something the average Joe has not generally done, at least not as much as the big guys. The first step to lifting more weight is building more muscle.

Weight training is an obvious necessity. Starting light is fine as long as you’re working on your form. Proper technique is essential to getting stronger, building muscle, and maintaining your health. What you may not have considered is the choice between free weights and machines. Most trainers suggest free weights (if there is a choice) because machines force you into fixed, unnatural movement patterns that can cause injuries. Free weights duplicate natural motions. Because free weights force you to move and balance the weight as you lift, you naturally build important stabilizer muscles and increase your overall strength. There is no machine you can use to balance weight for you in real life, so you might as well train with free weights.

Compound exercises are important and very beneficial for anyone looking to build muscle. A lot of people use exercises that isolate a single muscle group, once again because they have seen serious lifters doing just that. Most trainers agree that exercises targeting several muscle groups simultaneously are better than those that isolate specific muscles, both for building muscles and increasing your heart rate. I use compound exercises such as step ups with weight, incline bench presses, and weighted lunges as part of a circuit training activity. Get three or four great full body exercises and put them back to back with minimal rest and your heart will be racing in no time.

Don’t forget your nutrition if building muscle is a serious goal. Eating right is always an important consideration when you’re looking to live a healthy lifestyle. If your goals are specifically to get stronger and build more muscle, then you should probably consider a supplement in your diet to provide the nutrients you need. Many weight trainers suggest whey protein to supplement your workout. Whey protein provides the essential nutrients needed for your muscles to recover more quickly and grow around the fibers your isolating. Another common supplement is creatine. Very much like whey protein, creatine provides essential elements for muscle recovery and increased mass. Creatine in a number of varieties is an important part of your workout if building muscle is your goal. On top of this, in order to improve your general health as you work to build, you might add a multivitamin to your diet as well to supply your recommended daily allowances. A multivitamin ensures you’re getting the fuel you’ll need to build.

If building muscle is important to you, then using free weights and compound exercises will help first with your strength. That’s not all you need though.
