Distracted in Your Workout
Time at the gym these days is as imperative to a healthy lifestyle as anything else in your repertoire. But the results don’t come automatic. It’s not like you just show up and bam, you’re in shape. You gotta work. That’s why it’s always baffling to me to see people on their cell phones as they work out. I’ll admit that maybe they’ve figured something out that I haven’t, but it sure seems that if you’re distracted at the gym by your cell phone, you’re probably not going to maximize your time there.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for multitasking at the gym, almost every time I go I take a book to read while I’m on the bike. You might contend that there is no difference between reading away your time and talking on the phone. I would respond that much like driving with your cell phone, if you’re doing it while you workout, it’s probably not the best thing for you. I notice people on the elliptical or the treadmill talking on the phone while they go, and almost invariably their pace decreases as they talk, which as you might guess results in a decreased heart rate and ultimately fewer calories burned. My suggestion, for both the gym and your car…hang up and drive.
You might argue that not everything you do at the gym will be beneficial for your health, or most beneficial for your health anyway. And you might have a good point. Everyone knows that a healthy diet can affect your outcomes just as much, if not more than, working out. Exercise is important, but eating right is essential. Call someone next time you’re at the gym, I bet they’ll tell you the same.
Incorporating the right balance of vitamins and minerals, nutrients and water, into your healthy lifestyle can make a huge difference, maybe it can even make up for your time on the phone when your heart rate drops so much. Maybe you could just increase your intake of multivitamins and whey protein to offset your slowing pace at the gym. Regardless of your purpose though, I think we can all agree that a healthy diet and better nutrition are very important to maintaining your healthy lifestyle. Many people train after taking a multivitamin, a protein bar, or even healthy chocolate to give them more energy and improve their results. If you’re weight training, these things are almost absolutes. Whey protein and creatine have become staples in the weight training community because they provide such drastically improved results. Fat burners, essential fatty acids, calcium, antioxidants, and other muscle builders are available to help in your pursuit of better health. Of course, if you hung up the phone maybe it wouldn’t be so necessary. Most avid gym goers would disagree though I’m guessing, a balanced nutrition is a given now for anyone who wants results. So maybe you can just keep talking on the treadmill, but remember when you’re home to support all your hard work with multivitamins, calcium, minerals, and fat burners, even if it’s with something like a meal replacement. Don’t skip the most important step to your health, even if you talk your way through it.
