Your Diet on the Town

If you have the goal of a healthy lifestyle, or maybe just a healthier lifestyle, odds are there are several areas of your life you need to focus on. Many people will resolve to work out more, become more active, and get off the couch. And while those are always good things to focus on, a better place to start may be with your diet.

Most people recognize that cutting out or at least cutting down on sweets, fast foods, and alcohol is a necessity when you’re looking to improve your health. That may be easier said than done though. If you’re anything like me then nights out with friends are the most difficult times to watch your diet. What most people don’t realize is that a normal evening out to a restaurant and on the town can a lot of times result in 1,000 calories or more ingested…and that’s not including drinks. So how do you keep yourself and your diet under control when you’re out? Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Skip the appetizer. Appetizers like buffalo wings, breadsticks, nachos, and other fried delights are a huge part of that high calorie total. At some steakhouses and other American fare restaurants, a fried onion appetizer for example can run as high as 800 calories, just for starters. Consider a recommended 2,000-calorie daily diet for most people and that appetizer looks a lot more like the bad end of a future coronary. If you have to have something to nibble on before your meal gets to your table, try some chips and salsa, peanuts, or lettuce rolls, but you might caution yourself even there, looks can very often be deceiving.

Split a meal. One problem with a lot of restaurant meals is portion size. Instead of buying individual meals and gorging yourself, try ordering an agreeable entrée, splitting the plate, and sharing the calories. Mom always told you that sharing was good, and meals out are for sure a great place to start, for the sake of both your waist and your wallet.

If a healthy lifestyle is your goal and you’re worried about nights out with friends, there’s a lot you can cut out of your routine, but there are also a few things you can add to help with your weight loss or strength gaining goals before you even leave the house Multivitamins are generally accepted as essential additions to a healthy diet. Of course calcium, essential fatty acids, minerals, and protein should be staples in every calorie conscious meal you eat so you can have fun when you’re on the town. You can have cheat with your diet as long as you find a balance, and a good way to do that is to pop a multivitamin or down a whey protein shake every day with any of your three squares.

Eating solid and making good choices in your daily routine are important to a healthy lifestyle, but if you want to maintain your fun nightlife, watch your step with the appetizers and consider splitting your meal. On top of that though, a balance of multivitamins, proteins, and healthy choices in your day-to-day will help you lighten up when you go out. It’s not all fun and games, but it certainly doesn’t have to be all work either.
